Correcting Netflix 14: Omitted - Any Mention Of Big Red Flag In Forced Closing Of Vecchiotti’s Laboratory

Netflix’s Amanda Knox is an extreme example of misleading bias by cherrypicking. This post is another in our ongoing series, the mothership for material for this media-friendly page online soon.

This post is one in our ongoing series.

Amazingly EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO Dr Carla Vecchiotti became quite possibly the most discredited DNA expert in the world, when news about her appalling lab conditions exploded in Italy.

In their narrow-minded fanaticism to make Dr Mignini the most reviled prosecutor in the world - and Nick Pisa the most reviled reporter - the producers somehow left that awkward fact out of their report entirely. She and Dr Conti are given major time in the film to misrepresent key evidence.

Netflix’s own due diligence (if any; we think not) missed all of this entirely. Now thanks to Netflix the misrepresented evidence and Vecchiotti’s discredited opinions of the Scientific Police labs are being given credence as hard fact worldwide.

KrissyG in her own excellent review of the movie summarised the conditions that led to the lab being closed down. It happened directly because the Carabinieri DNA experts Dr Barni and Dr Berti appointed for the 2013-14 Nencini appeal (which Netflix also omitted any mention of) visited the place to inspect it, and to pick up some key evidence, a DNA sample from the knife.

They made mention of what they encountered in their report and in court testimony. That was nearly three years ago (January 2014) long before the final cut of the movie and long before the sale to Netflix was a done deal.

In our view this HAD to be yet another deliberate dishonesty.

2. Catnip’s Translations Of Main Italian Reports Of Lab Closing

Catnip kindly provided us with these translations of some of the Italian news reports 18 months ago.

The March 2015 report from News 24

The Medico-Legal Institute of Sapienza University in Rome was closed down this morning.

For some time it has been known that unhygienic conditions were the norm in the Institute and the Rector of the University has decided today, in anticipation of NAS findings, to shut down the entire mortuary.

Sapienza’s Institute did not have adequate space to accommodate the large number pf bodies and quite often they had to be spread out along the corridors.

The hygiene rules were onerous and the building inadequate. It was for this reason that the Public Prosecutor’s Office had ordered a detailed report by NAS which would have presented their findings within a few weeks.

The Rector of the University, Eugenio Gaudio, has pre-empted the PPO’s expected closure of the Institute. The closure, explains Guadio, had been necessary to prevent the raising of legal questions as regards the autopsies being carried out, which would have risked the results being no longer reliable in future.

During the NAS inspections, even cadaver remains from 1990 had been found, a serious anomaly due to, as the mortuary attendants explained, the fact that no one had ever reclaimed the bodies. Another serious problem at the Sapienza Institute is the huge disorder that reigns inside the building, where, in point of fact, cadavers are to be found out in the corridors.

The March 2015 report from Corriere.

Rome: bodies in the mortuary corridors, Medico-Legal Institute of Sapienza closed

The Rector’s decision anticipates the MOSSA by the Prosecutor’s Office which has been investigating conditions at the Medico-Legal Institute of Rome’s flagship university

by Giulio De Santis

ROME ““ The University of Sapienza’s Legal Medicine Institute has been closed for health reasons. The decision has been made by the university’s Rector, Eugenio Gaudio, who made the order before the Prosecutor’s Office could make a move. At Clodio Place the investigators, in fact, are expecting the filing of a report by NAS, where serious hygienic shortcomings by the management of the Institute are highlighted.

Unreliable autopsies?

The closure has been necessary to head off the raising of questions relating to future autopsy results that would have risked being unreliable. The problems discovered by the Carabinieri of the Health and Food Adulteration Unit ““ and noted to the university administration ““ relate to, in fact, the equipment, starting with the tables, intended for carrying out autopsies, which have deteriorated during the course of time. The oldest have been in the building since the early 1980s while those acquired more recently go back to ten years ago. Even the instruments used to examine the cadavers have deteriorated and should be replaced.

Cadavers in the corridors

During the inspections, remains of cadavers preserved since 1990 were found. An anomaly due to the fact that no one had ever reclaimed the bodies. The other problem raised by the doctors at the Institute and revealed by NAS is the disorder that reigns in the Institute, where it is possible to see cadavers in corridors due to the lack of space in which to store them. Sapienza has now promised to proceed with restoration works. There is lack of certainty though on the end point by which the Institute will become operative again. There is no compulsory time limit but the university has guaranteed a return to normality by the beginning of May.

Transferring the bodies

Contributing to the uncertainty are Sapienza’s empty coffers and the collection of funds is expected to be complicated. In the meantime, to try and minimise the impact of the closure, autopsies will be carried out at the Tor Vergata Institute directed by Professor Giovanni Arcudi. The bodies have already started to arrive in the last few days in the mortuary of that university and in some cases the work has been given to specialists from the Gemelli Polyclinic. A case file has been opened by the Prosecutor’s Office and assigned to Antonella Nespola who in October had already ordered the sequestration of the mortuary. The decision to close the Institute has been communicated to the Prosecutor’s Office, who is caught out by the choice.

The March 2015 report from RAI News.

Rome, Medico-Legal Institute closed. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating health conditions. The decision of the Sapienza University Rector Ettore Gaudio. Cadavers from 1990 found.

Cadavers in the corridors because of lack of space for storing them, serious health issues in the management of the Institute. For this reason, Sapienza’s Medico-Legal Institute has been shut down for health reasons. The March 2015 report from Cronaca

Cadavers in corridors, Medico-Legal Institute in Rome closed
Rector Eugenio Gaudio’s decision: «Autopsy results at risk».
01 March 2015

There were cadavers in the corridors due to lack of space, as well as serious health issues in the management of the building. For this reason the Medico-Legal Institute at Sapienza University in Rome has been closed for health reasons.

RECTOR’S DECISION. The decision had been taken by the unicersity’s Rector, Eugenio Gaudio, who made the order before the Public Prosecutor’s Office could act. At Clodio Place, the investigators, in fact, are expecting the filing of a NAS report, where serious hygiene problems in the management of the Institute are highlighted. The closure was necessary to forestall questions being raised concerning future autopsy results which would have been at risk of being unreliable.

REMAINS OF CADAVERS FROM 1990. Inspections revealed remains of cadavers preserved from 1990. An anomaly due to the fact that no one had ever reclaimed the bodies. The other problem raised by the doctors at the Institute and noted by NAS is the disorder that reigns in the Institute, where it is possible to see cadavers in the corridors because of lack of space to store them.

The March 2015 report from Dagospia.

Sad corridors dimly lit. A room with refrigeration units from the 1980s, dozens of units occupied by the bodies of persons deceased by violent means and never recognised, never asked for, and, if foreigners, never repatriated. It’s here that, as many say, along the basement corridor it is even sadder: there’s no space inside and the cadavers are just left there, on trolleys, at times not even in mortuary bags. The smell, they say, is pungent and nauseating. To say nothing of the dissection tables and the equipment, or even the safety of the workers. Non-existent.

And so the Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation by NAS, the Carabinieri of the Health and Food Adulteration Unit [nucleo antisofisticazione e sanità ]. Eugenio Gaudio, Rector of Sapienza University “” of which the Medico-Legal Institute is a part “” and Domenico Alessio, Director-General of the Polyclinic at Umberto I University, have pre-empted likely legal orders deciding to shut down the building.

SAPIENZA MORTUARY

It received the latest body last Wednesday a little before midnight. The others “” like that of the young man squashed on Friday night by a bus in Piazza Venezia and dying in San Giovanni Hospital “” will all be, from Thursday onwards, taken to the Gemelli Polyclinic.

A truly disconcerting situation for the largest mortuary in the Capital, the Sapienza Medico-Legal Institute. Already by October month end Public Prosecutor Antonella Nespola had sequestered six operating theatres at the Umberto I University Polyclinic, which is close to the mortuary, and also placed the Medico-Legal Institute in her sights.

And «for possible contamination, likely compromised results, the building physically falling apart, cadavers in the corridors and inadequate equipment», they explain in the mortuary. «NAS inspected the mortuary when I was not even Rector» explains Eugenio Gaudio. «We are all hopeful that the restoration works will conclude as soon as possible: within two months».

MORTUARY

Eight years a scandal led to the lose of the operating theatre at Umberto I: not only were the health and safety conditions extremely bad (blood traces everywhere, building falling apart, a back and forth of funeral agency operators who were following the relatives of the deceased), but corneas were being stolen from the bodies, which in turn ended up having to be transferred from one place to another under armed guard. But today «we’re re-opening the Polyclinic dissection room» explains Gaudio. «I’ve put in an order for autopsy tables and new and modern equipment».

And even if the Rector highlights that the decision to close «had been taken in accord with the Health Director and Director-General of the Polyclinic, with all due care and authority» in the Public Prosecutor’s Office the news of the closure, which seems to have arrived with only 24 hours’ notice, has raised a storm. Chief Prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone plays it down. But he also explains that today or at the latest tomorrow «there will be a meeting at the PPO with the top layers of management from the Polyclinic and Rector Eugenio Gaudio». And in the meantime, «for now, Gemelli will be asked to handle the immediate exigencies».

The funeral undertakers who tell of the scene from hell are describing «flies and bluebottles attracted by the odour, doors that don’t seal properly and when you go downstairs at the least you almost fall ill», as a source who works in the mortuary recalls. «But even on the first floor, where the forensic pathologists work, everything has remained stuck at 40 years ago. To say nothing of the place where the evidence is kept: all heaped up on each other, contaminated according to me unusable».

EUGENIO GAUDIO

Captain Dario Praturlon, NAS Commander in Rome who last September on delegation from the Public Prosecutor’s Office carried out an inspection, explains that «we only had to check if there were health and safety irregularities: and we had found lots of them. The employers “” that is the Rector and the Polyclinic Health Director “” are obliged to fix up the building. To give the workers a safe place to work. We found none of all this». The first criminal charges are expected quite soon, although relating to previous management.

3. Lab Reopens Sans Vecchiotti

The lab has been closed for 18 months but now Corriere reports its reopening under the supervision of three prosecutors’ offices, making it all but impossible for either the lab or Vecchiotti to perpetrate further transgressions.

University’s Polyclinic takes over management of Rome’s mortuary instead of Sapienza University, while the forensic pathology department is now overseen by the three relevant Public Prosecutor’s Offices (Rome, Tivoli and Civitavecchia).

It’s staggering to think this woman had the cheek to preach at others.

For nineteen years, this ‘expert forensic’ failed to test the DNA of the perp who killed Contessa Ogliata.  The poor woman’s husband had to take out a civil writ to get the rightful perp jailed.

How many other cases of negligence are there, at the hands of Dr Vecchiotti?  She was charged, case found in favour of the husband, who had no justice for nineteen years and fined €150K, together with co-expert, Vincenza Pascali, also found culpable.

I understand Pascali is now on the same editorial board with Peter Gill, which brings out Gill’s articles along the specious lines of how the Sollecito DNA was contaminated.  However, isn’t this the same Pascali who found allele fragments of both Knox and Sollecito on the bra fabric, and walked off the case - ahem, or, as the Friends of Amanda Knox claim, he had done his piece and now wasn’t needed - because of course, a lawyer who no longer believes his client has to ethically withdraw.

Let’s not forget, Conti, Vecchiotti and Pascali are *legal* medics.  They understand the implications of their findings.

What surprises me, in no one article there is a notice about Vecciotti and Conti as the responsible scientists for that terrible messy lab. There is neither a remark about any investigation and possible punishment of the responsible people for that lab?!

Thanks KrissyG. Knox “lost” a lawyer for exactly that reason in the early days. See his photo here.

Elisa, smart observation. Those translated articles reflect the first shocked reaction, our purpose here, and all of them went online on or about the same day.

Investigations ARE going on, although whenever there might be the involvement of the mafias, or of the Knox PR (really), the police and prosecutors keep their heads down until such time as they are ready to pounce.

Greg Hampikian was in a Dateline TV program called “The Killing in Cobb County”. As a paid expert witness with the Idaho Innocence Project, he spoke up for the murderer Waseem Daker in court. Daker called Hampikian and asked him to challenge the hair evidence.

Years after the crime, Cobb County Georgia (near Atlanta) found hairs in a blanket that the victim was wrapped in. Nuclear DNA tests were finally possible. The root of one of the hairs yielded a perfect match to Daker.

Hampikian questioned the fact that the “reports” originally said that no roots were found on the hairs, and on the strength of that “report”, he questioned the hair evidence.

However, much other serious evidence proved Daker had been the killer of pretty young flight attendant Karmen Smith.

He had also stabbed her little five-year-old boy 18 times, but the child lived. Daker did this for revenge against the woman who lived with them, a woman he was stalking.

Lottie the woman he stalked and who at the first trial was so terrified by the obsessed Daker, is now so guilt-ridden yet afraid of him that she has recanted all of her testimony against him on TV. She is now trying to soothe him with writing him letters, sending him Biblical material and doing legal research for him at his constant request while he is behind bars. She’s facing perjury charges and possible jail time.

Cobb County investigators found plenty of hard evidence separate from Lottie’s testimony. Her word has proved useless as she is an absolute liar. Daker has sent her over 4,000 letters while incarcerated. She has now mortgaged her home to help pay for him to get a new trial. She has put him as beneficiary on her life insurance.

Such is the power of twin evils: fear, guilt and in her case, a lot of lust IMO as she and Daker were actually lovers before the stalking. She denied that fact for 17 years and lied about it on the witness stand.

Now Hampikian is helping Daker’s case pro bono.

Daker is a stone cold killer. His own family said he was “sick, delusional”.

This Lottie the woman who once helped put him in prison is so afraid of his threats from behind bars to kill her children and grandchildren that she has become his secretary and legal researcher, trying to yet again appease this irrational animal.

It was her former relationship with Waseem Daker that brought him into the life of young Karmen Smith and her young child, whom he then murdered and stabbed.

I think there’s more on this case on tv show, 20/20: Stalked.

You can find “The Killing in Cobb County” on Dateline on YouTube.

How can Hampikian take such cases and try to destroy the State’s case against obvious murderers?

As we approach the sad anniversary of Meredith’s death at the hands of the unholy triumvirate, our chief protagonist is bleating about her lot in life yet again on her blog.

She prattles on about how tough it is for an exoneree when people still don’t believe you, loss of anonymity etc etc. It’s her most “poor me” article to date. She does seem very angry, even for a lowlife with a fairly high baseline anger level to begin with. She almost appears to be unravelling but remains defiant at the end. Most likely this is just her latest offering to try and torture Meredith’s dignified family. Meredith’s family are a great reflection of who she was. Poxy’s family are similar and the contrast is stark indeed.

Quite apart from the fact that she is not an exoneree or someone who was found innocent, or had no biological traces found tying her to the crime, she seems incapable of understanding one very simple thing. People generally don’t believe in her or her innocence because she is an entirely hateful character who not only murdered someone who was her better in every way imagineable but she also accused an innocent man of the crime and let him languish in jail for three weeks. A crime for which she served her time and which is on her record forever. The European court of human rights appeal is a nonsense as we all know.

Her best friend Madison found her out and abandoned her and she continues to reference her regularly in articles without using her name. She does it again in the penultimate article on her blog about Trump v Clinton.

She’s clearly anguished about losing her only actual friend (and lover?) but her constant signalling in her articles is having no effect. I think this tortures her more than what she did to Meredith. I wish some eneterprising newspaper editor somewhere would get the chequebook out and make Madison an offer she couldn’t refuse.

Victims of genuine miscarriages of justice like the Birmingham Six here in the U.K. are always treated sympathetically by the press and the public. No right thinking person is anything other than empathetic in these circumstances. Having a final motivation report that states clearly that you were there with your boyfriend and literally washed the blood of the victim off your hands (funny how she always misses that part out when she’s claiming she was exonerated) doesn’t cut the mustard as it were when it comes to innocence claims.

High profile cases where obviously guilty people literally get away with murder like Casey Anthony and Poxy herself are met with outrage and disbelief by normal, thinking human beings. The only people who believe in folk like Casey Anthony and Poxy are dysfunctional, ill or damaged people like them who most likely have empathy based on their own mental illness.

Poxy may continue with her facade of defiance but having to keep up that level of pretence has not only prematurely aged her, it is clearly doing further damage on the inside. I don’t believe this story has any happy ending in it for her at all.

She may think she’s found a soul mate in the weird Chris character but I suspect if he hangs around he’s most likely to become her carer as she descends further into the madness cave. They do seem well suited in fairness. It’s good for society at large that neither is on the market as it were.

Posted by davidmulhern on 10/25/16 at 06:44 AM | #

@davidmulhern, Thanks for a warning about Knox’s latest blog, her whine of the powerless. She gave away her power when she killed Meredith and became a professional liar. Now every word she says is rejected by the majority of people.

Knowing every word she says is discredited, it must make her feel very small, very powerless. This is the awful result of trying to feel big by taking away all Meredith’s power.

Defiance is all Knox has left. She’s locked in her hamster wheel of despair.

As for Madison, she did try to stay loyal to a good friend. I believe it was a normal heterosexual relationship based on youthful ideals and college closeness.

I bet it was Knox who pulled the plug on the relationship because Madison knew her too well, too well for Knox to hide the lies and to fake emotions about how she really feels about Raf, the Kerchers, Meredith, her parents, etc.

Maybe she was too tempted to confess to such a close loving friend and Madison began to seem like a threat.

Madison might have exerted emotional pressure. She probably felt she was owed an explanation after having moved to Perugia and supported Knox in every possible way after her arrest and through the trial. Maybe Madison thought she could handle the truth, they talked and were on the brink of Knox telling her she had really killed Meredith, and Madison couldn’t handle it and fled to regain denial.

Knox after years of Capanne Prison life, then her return to her own Chinatown apartment and a renewed connection with Seattle coffee houses, UW, and the two kittens while continuing to do post-prison interviews, Knox had a hard adjustment back to normal life.

She didn’t live at home very long at all. She got involved with 2 musicians, James and Colin. She wrote the biography. Got a job at a bookstore. Returned to classes at UW. Cut all ties with Raffaele. Phased out FOA and the Moore gang, all erstwhile supporters got a quick goodbye. Frank Sfarzo was sent packing, cursing as he went.

Madison may have found Knox greatly changed and not for the better after prison.

Now Madison is just another Raffaele, hiding what she knows about the real Foxy and perhaps even about the crime if Foxy spilled in an unguarded moment.

Now Madison stays mum to salvage her own reputation and to give one last gasp of loyalty to the smiling sociopath. This way both Raf and Mad feel better about themselves in their proud masochism. They think they are protecting the damaged friend, and that nothing can set things right for Meredith even if they denounce Amanda and reveal all. Just more pain for more people, and no further deniability for Knox’s fawning family. Maybe unforeseen fallout of a legal or financial sort, so they keep quiet.

It’s so weird. Chris is an unknown quantitiy, probably riding the celebrity wave before it crashes on his foolish head. He doesn’t look like the nurturing type to me. Maybe he’s like a hired pitbull to intimidate people for Knox.

Knox better be careful, Chris is a writer and may be using her for fodder for his next novel a la Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. How can Knox trust anybody when they may be wanting her fame for an entrée into media, or book deals, or as an outlandish prank to rebel against societal norms by embracing a female killer, or for other mental illness radar as davidmulhern mentions about murder groupies drawn to the likes of Casey Anthony. Birds of a feather.

Knox’s life really is destroyed, her options more limited than they were in high school. She has gone backward in life. She’s finally realizing it. I will have to look at her latest blog which I rarely read, knowing in advance it’s the thrashings of the squirrel cage or the hamster wheel of lies.

Posted by Hopeful on 10/25/16 at 02:38 PM | #

Interesting hypotheses @Hopeful.

Whilst browsing some American election stuff in USA today.com, I came across Knox’s latest blog entry which had been reproduced in full. I was interested to see what the comments section contained.

Needless to say the ignorance levels of the Knoxophiles are as high as ever. Even when they are corrected and pointed in the right direction, they either ignore the advice or lie and say they have read the court documents and that these have been discredited by a “higher court”. It truly is an exercise in futility trying to debate with these people; they are a lost cause.

Sad to say though but having skimmed down to the bottom of the 90 or so comments, I get the impression that there may be a small majority now believing in Knox’s innocence. It’s astonishing just how credulous people can be.

I do believe that’s what sets us apart from the Knoxen. If presented with evidence of Knox’s innocence (or OJ’s or Casey Anthony’s), I would first interrogate it and, if I found it to be reasonable and based on fact, not vague assumption, I would accept it and move on. I might even be persuaded to drop Knox herself a line to apologise for my previous position.

The fact remains that all of the available evidence to date points to her, Sollecito and Guede, hence we on the side of truth remain firmly in the guilt camp. The Knox groupies simply refuse to engage with the evidence and instead indulge in childish playground, fingers in your ears, head in the sand rhetoric which has the opposite effect of advancing their cause. They just look stupid.

At this stage, even the discovery of Knox’s missing clothing, soaked in Meredith’s blood or similar attire or footwear from Knox or Sollecito would merely have the conspiracy theorists out in force claiming the folks at the mortuary had obtained samples from Meredith at the bidding of the corrupt Police to fit their heroes up.

There truly is no hope for these people.

Posted by davidmulhern on 10/26/16 at 06:10 AM | #

@davidmulhern,
I agree, there is simply no hope for these people.

These days I find it easy to spot family members and friends of Knox (who we all know) in the comments sections of her many “poor me” releases, they leap out of the page at you.
It really is a total waste of time to engage with them and the kindest I could be in describing them would be ‘unsavoury’.

I do not believe her lies regarding crying herself to sleep after she read Gill’s Independent article in the slightest.

What she is clearly doing here is justifying her continuous and shameless hogging of the limelight with her full on campaign to grab more blood money from her killing of Meredith Kercher.
She knows full well people are asking why yet another so called documentary has been made.

Bad News: 2 earthquakes hit Italy today within 2 hours.

Epicenter is near Perugia in a town about 50 miles away. About a 5. on Richter scale. See Daily Mail online for more details. I’m not sure how much damage Perugia received.

AK’s continual pointing to Guede just confirms her guilt to me. If she wasn’t there then she shouldn’t know what happened.
I also think more people are getting fed up with seeing her and RS.
Guilty parties can’t stop re-visiting the crime.
She had yet another chance with Netflix to shout out her innocence. Instead she swung the pendulum, “maybe I’m this, maybe I’m that”.  Would an innocent person suggest they might be guilty? No they wouldn’t.

Apropos of this, DavidB, it’s interesting to note how the cast of the Netflix are described, as submitted to IMdB:

Well, at least they’re not described as ‘exonerees’.

As the Kercher family have issued a public statement they have no intention of watching the Nefflix film, one wonders at the cheek of the producers giving them ‘credits’ and ‘thanks’.

So Amanda Knox headlines as the star, and Meredith is relegated to her underling, as a support act.

As I wrote on Knox blog

“Dear Amanda… Just be aware that we are working constantly to prove your guilt without a shadow of a doubt. There is nothing you can do because you know full well that you are on borrows time. Also be aware that we will never stop until true justice is realized.”

The point being that I don’t care whether she knows who I am or my coordinates or not. of course she will not come after me personally because she is far too much of a coward to do so
Therefore I will remain a constant threat and a reminder that she will never be safe.

KrissyG, re credited cast: it’s foul. And yet what we’ve come to expect.

Random: Could Knox and Raf have lied about plans to go to Gubbio, and really planned to go in the opposite direction to Foligno instead?

There’s an airport in Foligno. Could they have considered escaping after the crime by plane, flying out of Foligno in a run from consequences? Do we have any proof other than their own word that they planned to go to Gubbio for a day trip?
