Here I would like to examine one good possible reason WHY he mis-stated the case.
In this context, please take special note in Posts 2 and 3 of how the Knox PR shills and to a lesser extent the Sollecito PR shills increasingly misled in 2007-2010 about AK and RS and the evidence against them.
This helped to drown out genuine news of what was a very fair and decisive trial and the blatant corruption of the 2011 appeal court that came next.
Who were those shills? The list became very long but Doug Preston and Michael Heavey began large-scale lying from 2007 (to such an extent that even the defense counsel complained) and Steve Moore noisily picked up the load from 2009.
2. John Douglas: The Public Persona We Already Knew
Douglas was born on June 18, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York City, so he is now aged 73. In 1995 John Douglas turned in his FBI badge and he retired at the tellingly early age of 49.
In the subsequent 23 years he wrote some books on past profiling cases which won some respect, even though not everybody marvels at the science of profiling and its so-so results and some even consider them something of a fraud. He gained a loyal readership and saw his alter ego repeatedly recreated in crime shows on TV.
But since 2004 Douglas does not seem to have written any books exclusively by himself. Much of what he wrote since was recycled, and he adopted some seemingly dogmatic and badly argued positions, for example on the JonBenet Ramsey and West Memphis Three cases.
In 2011-2013 John Douglas first wrote about Meredith’s case and, with Heavey, Moore and others, entered into a major lobbying campaign in the US. To quote from the Machine’s third post:
Douglas came late to the case and the “beautiful” Amanda Knox seems to have turned him into something of a whirling dervish. He has made false claims in several books, in postings on his own and other websites, in interviews, in a pitch to a near-empty room at the Congress, and in one or two forays into the State Department.
Peaking in 2013 before the Nencini appeal (the repeat of the annulled Hellman appeal), they were seemingly made to (1) poison the jury pool of an ongoing legal process and (2) inflame American public opinion to create pushbacks at the political level.
In his four posts so far, the Machine has meticulously demonstrated how John Douglas became detached from the realities of the case. He has been misleading millions on a grand scale. Literally dozens and dozens of his findings are flat-out wrong.
And Douglas did this with a remarkably angry and inflammatory contempt for the Italian investigators and judiciary.
In what the Machine examined John Douglas comes across as defamatory (against especially Dr Mignini), racist (against Rudy Guede), and xenophobic (against Italy in general) and utterly callous toward Meredith’s long-suffering family.
3. John Douglas: Telling Mental Signs In Public Domain
On October 13, 2017 an article by Ed Power about John Douglas’s mental health appeared in the British newspaper The Telegraph: The real Mindhunter: inside the head of FBI ‘serial killer whisperer’ John E Douglas.
The article was never questioned or rebutted. The sourcing is specific. The Telegraph, a respected source in itself, published this Article 10 months ago & it has apparently not been challenged since then even by his family.
And there is independent corroboration in an already-screened movie series, that addressed the subject of Douglas’s mental health, which was offered on Netflix beginning in December 2015.
The Telegraph article is well worth reading in its entirety and includes the following passage:
“...the ghoulish nature of the job eventually wore Douglas down. Nightmares and sleepless nights were increasingly frequent and he found it hard to communicate with his family….
Under immense pressure at work, he contracted viral encephalitis ““ a fever which doctors said “fried his brain”. His family were warned he would likely be left in a vegetative stage.
He recovered however,.........but the psychological trauma never quite lifted and he turned in his badge for good in 1995 aged just 49.”
So he was not aged more than 49 when he contracted viral encephalitis at least 23 years ago.
Complete recovery from viral encephalitis of this severity is unusual. Any implication that it was “immense pressure at work” that caused his viral encephalitis is misleading.
Only a virus could have caused viral encephalitis. However, stress could have lowered his physiological resistance.
To size him up with confidence we really need to know more about this viral episode, but the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) will almost certainly be enlisted to hinder fulfillment of that need.
Common sense tells us that Douglas’s fall from his former excellence into his current incompetence and gross negligence is probably a late consequence of his viral encephalitis,
This late consequence is analogous to Shingles as a late consequence of Chickenpox.
4. John Douglas: Was He Hijacked By The Knox PR?
The evidence for this seems pretty clear.
The last book with Douglas as sole author was in 2004. The AK Book “The Forgotten Killer” was published in 2013. His chapter was co-written with Mark Olshaker.
The co-authors of other chapters were the PR shills Douglas Preston, Michael Heavey, Steve Moore, and Jim Lovering. All have been exposed by us here over the years.
The Introduction was by Thomas Lee Wright, and the malicious grandstander Bruce Fischer introduced at least some of this team to one another; his fingerprints seem on the book as well as those of Marriott and the Knox-Mellases.
Let us allow a few of our past exposures to show how they originated almost all of Douglas’s false claims .

Viral encephalitis involves swelling of the brain. Seemingly the human equivalent of BSE, known in the public consciousness as “Mad Cows Disease” though BSE is fatal when contracted by humans, so obviously it is not quite the same.
This is from the NHS website -

John Douglas the real person as opposed to the sockpuppet seems to have been awol for up to 5 years now (though his shadow-writers still seem to be be cashing in).
His website and twitter and facebook have all been languishing. The last tweet here (maybe by him, maybe not) was on 8 December 2015.

Ideally John Douglas withdraws all “his” terrible work on the case, castigates his captors, distances the mafia poodles, and sets about some apologizing.
If he WAS shadow-written on the case by the first-generation crackpots (all in it to promote themselves) it will not be the first time on the AK & RS side.
Both the Knox and the Sollecito books were shadow-written, seemingly by the exact-same mafia poodles. The false claims in them are equally numerous and very often similar.
Both RS and AK have shown strong signs of not even knowing what exactly is in “their” books, of words having been put in their mouths as it were.
The Knox book has over 500 false statements as Chimera showed. The Sollecito book has several hundred. We have had numerous posts on these lines.

Thanks. I checked the Amazon reviews for the 2008 Douglas book it criticised (Inside the Mind of BTK).
The many exasperated one-star and two-star reviews go even beyond your and Cardiol’s discrediting.
The symptoms James Raper described all seem to have been on overdrive.
I wanted a book about the BTK killer, not about the author. I got so annoyed with Douglas’ self- obsession that I returned it for a full refund….
Douglas seems to spend more talking about how great he is than on BTK. Not worth the time spent reading it…..
Douglas covered the BTK already, in Obsession, and though he disguised the discussion, it is clearly the same facts, the same ideas, and the same conclusions. Why he chose to write about the BTK again, this time devoting an entire book to him, seems to be more a kind of personal cleansing, or purging of the soul, for having contributed very little to the understanding and the capture of the BTK when his services were first requested some 30 years ago (though he naturally suggests that his profiles were fairly accurate, and simply not acknowledged—a supposition not substantiated by the actual facts of the case—the original profile was general, inconclusive, and ultimately rather useless)....
So here it was others not Douglas that got the real killer right - just as in the AK and RS case.

Super post Cardiol which, whilst not perhaps providing proof positive of Douglas’s motivations behind becoming embroiled in the Knox/Sollecito sewer, gives several extremely strong indicators that it has been a genuine medical condition that has played the major role in leading this man down a very dark path.
Seems like Lady Luck had a major part to play as viral encephalitis can be picked up through innocuous stuff like insect bites or contaminated food. There but for the grace of god go I and all that. No such excuses for Moore, Clemente, Heavey et al right enough.
I feel genuinely sorry for Douglas in light of this new, to me at least, information on his previous medical issues. I suspect that the chances of him seeing the light and retracting are vanishingly small as who knows if he even has sufficient brain function these days to understand what he has done and how completely he has been duped.
Pete’s comments on his apparent withdrawal from online life is telling I think. Or maybe at his age he just doesn’t want the hassle any more and he’s living a quiet, retired life that he has no intention of upsetting in any way. If the latter, then the best hope is that he dips his toe in the online water occasionally and his conscience gets pricked. Assuming he still has one!
I do wonder if the pre viral encephalitis Douglas would have pinned his colours to the mast of the tramp steamer SS Knox quite so willingly and seemingly without any form of due diligence? Somehow I doubt it.

The only condition that John Douglas has been suffering from for years is stupidity. I’ve seen no justification for the praise he has received. He’s just a glorified fortune teller.

Hmmm. I would have thought that makes the readers and tv watchers the stupid ones, not Douglas, and make him and his puppet masters look smart. If we can drive a wedge between all of them, as Cardiol did, we have achieved a lot.
Many birds with one stone. Note none of them and also not Knox have gone public for quite a few weeks. Marriott dying might also have wrecked Knox’s act. Being seen as mafia poodles might also have them waddling off with their tails between their legs.
The last big targets are Netflix and Ground Report which still shows nearly 200 crazy posts. It was dying on the vine, but an avowed bigot and mafia poodle, Justin Weinger, stepped in and is trying to prop it back up.

I agree John Douglas was hijacked for his reputation and high profile. As commenter davidmulhern considers, Douglas may have bowed out of any stress and allowed shadow writers and others to manage his image, with the profits split. His high profile and fame have been weaponized to defend Knox. What a twisting of fate, the opposite of justice. I fear money has erased all other considerations for Douglas and his puppeteers.
Due to belated effects of viral encephalitis he may prefer peace and pleasure to anything else. Well, hopefully he is OK enough to live simply but well to the end of his days for the sake of all the good he did in his youth. He was pioneering a tough criminal field when not many other experts existed. Maybe in his youth he was able to compartmentalize the horrors he saw with serial killers, but is now having to wrestle and exorcise suppressed past memories.
Sadly for Meredith’s justice I doubt John Douglas will rally enough at this late date to clear up his past errors or apologize for mistakes in the Knox case or any other case.
In his prime of youth he would never have let the Knox PR smoke and mirrors made of half-truths and gargantuan lies convince him she was not involved.
OT: thanks for Van Gogh links. Yes, as you say his early stuff is so dark, gray and glum. His last stuff was lively and vibrant, outdoor scenes of natural beauty in France, peach orchards, colors.
Luckily I can drive across a nearby state line to a little studio that leads us by the hand to paint Van Gogh white plum? blossoms on blue background. They also have a Picasso blue nude (very modest pose) and an Henri Manguin scene of woman holding umbrella beneath trees at seaside of St. Tropez. I love almost any water scene or ocean scene. About Van Gogh: the last teacher two weeks ago who helped us paint the Van Gogh sunflowers had been to Amsterdam to his museum. Oh she was a real fan, she had 3 of his books on display to share. I fear he was mad as a hatter and had a very unholy soul tie with his brother Theo, but Vincent seemed to have finally found happiness in life at the end, a search his friend Paul Gaugin did in Tahiti, bold colors and simple cheer.

Conspiracy-theory-prone. Douglas is not alone.
When Heavey or Moore get up and drone on half their audiences fall asleep or tiptoe out. We saw that happen at the Seattle University panel in 2011.
I really like the numerous images of Candace Dempsey facing the wrong way when the slides are being shown. There’s a fruitcake for sure.

The Knox part of the book still cuts off before the final Florence and Rome appeals. I quibble about the “interrogation” but dont see anything else too objectionable. .
There is not yet any Italian language book with anything like the depth of James Raper’s but at least one (in addition to James’s if he puts iit into Italian) is coming.

An important point arising from Cardiol’s focus on the first-generation crackpots which should end up here as a main post.
They include three from the FBI and one from the Washington State court system. On TV and in writing John Douglas, Steve Moore and Jim Clemente all wrap themselves in the mantle of the FBI.
Steve Moore in particular is prone to imply that he has the FBI at his back and FBI agents still in service would see things the same way - and he would have “fired” other agents for doing what the Italian investigators did even though he is ignorant of over 90 percent of the evidence.
But as we have many times posted, the real FBI works very closely with the Italian counterparts, they exchange officers, help one another with training (Italians go to Quantico) and at any one time have dozens of joint operations. We have never had any beef with them (except Graham Rhodes got a bizarre phonecall from their Seattle office which gave him a chance to fire a shot back at that misled agent).
Also the real FBI knows of the mafia connections in the case and would hardly align knowingly with those folks.
The real FBI is in the US news now far more than I have ever seen it and its methods and objectivity have been put into question, perhaps correctly, perhaps politically. This statement by the agents’ association was put out a few months ago to counter some of the distortion.
