Perugia: Jury Selection May Be Completed Today
Posted by Peter Quennell
Update: three men and three women ranging from 35 to 57 years old, including a young lawyer, have been selected. Three women and one man have been selected as alternates.
Italian media are reporting that a jury of six, with four alternates, should be announced by the close of court business today. We remain curious as to whether their names will become public.
Judge Beatrice Cristiani is now mentioned to be the second judge alongside Judge Giancarlo Massei, the President of the Court of Assize. The name we have been seeing previously was Judge Carla Giangamoni.
Also being reported is this attempt at poetry by Rudy Guede, six weeks into his 30-year sentence.
My tears are born from the darkness of solitude, full of pain. My tears, my tears. Transparent as water are my tears, but full of truth and love.
Doesn’t read to us like a confession or a reaching-out to the Kerchers for forgiveness. Reader comments under the story on the Corriere della Sera website are universally negative.
He has twenty-nine years and 46 weeks to rework it.
Comments
Judge Beatrice Cristiani?
“The three judges, Beatrice Cristiani, Rosaria Monaco and Lidia Brutti, denied the presence of clear signs of guilt and waved the need for cautionary detainment. Said decision was considered a defeat for the magistrate Giuliano Mignini who firmly believes that the journalist is connected to the ‘Monster crimes’. He has protested against Spezi’s release and has already announced his intention to appeal against the ruling. According toMignini, cautionary measures were waived due to the public’s support for the journalist, both in Italy and abroad. He called the decision the result of a ‘serious and unqualified campaign of the mass media’.”

Yes Pete, readers comments are very negative, here’s a sample of them, but there are many more and they are very similar:

...” Yeah, let’s make Rudy another star!...A bit more of social responsibility and sensitivity please… it’s is important to sell papers but do it in a responsible way…Rudy, Amanda, Rosa and Olindo…anybody else now to turn into a star? (NdT Rosa Bazzi sentenced to life with her husband Olindo for murdering four “noisy” neighbors and attempting to murder a fifth one)...Which is the true “land of opportunity” now? Congratulations, you have succeded in causing me anguish and dismay. Claudio”

“Don’t you have anything else to write about? You could have printed a million other news rather than that.Chiara”

“Dear Corriere, I wonder why you haven’t published my comment…maybe because I was asking to quit printing news exploiting the doubtful notoriety of convicted criminals…is Rudy the only Italian inmate writing poetry? I don’t think so…please stop printing this stuff”

“The sad Perugia event has originated strange phenomena: one becomes a writer, the other an actress..and they are believed to be guilty of a brutal murder. And the “reward” consists in publishing the news. It’s a sad and rotten notoriety ...”
The general feeling here in Italy is that the media should stop giving “sad and rotten notoriety” to sentenced criminals and suspects of a vicious crime, and the leading opinion is that the media show lack of social responsibility by promoting murderers and suspected murderers to stardom.
Nicki, it reads like the same reaction as to the Knox movie, and it is very impressive. Same fight there as we are trying to fight here. As Machine said, this is a landmark case and it’s important some lessons be learned and people put up the right fight. Meredith matters.
Sad though it is, I don’t think this is so much about Meredith in the eye of the general public, although I agree she absolutely mattered. Nicki is right, I think this is more about the newspapers turning Knox & Guede into semi-celebrities and that is sickening right minded people be them Italian, American or British. (Notice the only Italian accused is the one keeping his head down and out of the press? I wonder if this will affect the outcome) Discussing the case on a dedicated blog is one thing, but the tabloid press have gone to town on this story (My God, I’m starting to agree with Edda on something, I need to lie down…) Even I’m getting sick of seeing Amanda in the press and I’m following this story like a bloodhound!! If Amanda is found innocent, she’ll be in Italian Hello magazine showing off her fab new kitchen & her amazing six 8 figure by the end of her first week of freedom. If she is found guilty, she will be notorious and have TV movies made of her life. Considering that she will be out of prison even with a guilty verdict by the time she is 50, she will have a nice media paid for nest egg to come out to and slip into obscurity. Schapelle Corby (according to the Sydney Morning Herald libel fans!) is making piles of money by handing all her biography copyrights to her sister’s Balinese husband but then people are more assured of her innocence and she hasn’t changed her story. Regardless, Amanda will no doubt find a way to profit from this media interest whatever happens. In a sick hideous way, this case is possibly the best thing that has even happened to Amanda thanks to the papers. They need to starve her of the publicity oxygen that her and her parents so clearly crave by their continuing to feed the media beast.
Yes DS, it is worth noticing how the Sollecito clan has been keeping a very low profile after the inital bursts by Dr Sollecito, who hasn’t been appearing on TV talk shows nor speaking to the media for a long time now. Good advice from his top-level legal counsel?
Nicki, this adds to our growing conclusion that Knox herself and probably the whole KM tribe would have been way better served by a cool-headed US-based lawyer rather than a klutzy bull-in-a-china-shop PR company.
I think even if they had a US based lawyer AK and the KM tribe would have been in the same situation they are now. The Murder of Meredith Kercher happened in Italy and Italian LE and judiciary is dealing with it in the right, legal way.
It seems they had advice from a Seattle judge, a Seattle lawyer an Italian American award wining journalist and possibly some politicians (Congress persons) that Edda Mellas was trying to recruit for their cause with the help of AK’s brain washed friends.
See letter from EM to Madison Paxton and the rest of the gang:
Hello all,
Hey everyone. Amanda’s mom asked me to put this up:
...
Thank you all for your support!
Amanda is hanging in there and doing the best she can under the current circumstances, however we were all disappointed that the Judge did not grant our request to have Amanda released to “home arrest”, a much less severe form of detainment. Many of you have asked if there was anything that you could do to help, well there is!
You can send a letter Jim McDermott asking him to help in this situation. You are welcome to write anything you would like but if you want some ideas here are a few suggestions.
1. Amanda has now been held for seven months in the most severe form of detainment, without being charged. She is locked in a cell for 22 hours a day.
2. The prosecutor in charge of her case is on trial himself for abuse of power from another case he was involved in.
3. The media has totally misrepresented the case and the facts. There is no real evidence of any kind against Amanda.
If Jim is not your congress person you can also send a letter to the one from your district. Here is Jim’s address
The Honorable Jim McDermott
U. S. Representative
1809 Seventh Avenue, Suite 1212
Seattle, WA 98101
Sincerely,
Edda
...I have a list of addresses for other districts as well, so if you want one of those let me know. If you have any questions about who to send your letters to, what to write, or anythign else just message me.
And for those who like, print the photo of yourself in your ‘free amanda’ or ‘free amanda and raffaele’ shirt/sign and include that with your letter.
Thank you all so much,
Madison
