Apartment Below Meredith’s Is Re-Tenanted And Hers Will Be Too Soon

The Italian news service AGI has a report on the re-renting of the house that includes this:

Apparently annoyed but amused. one new tenant [of the basement apartment] did not want to talk to reporters. A few days ago, he rented the apartment with two other students…

‘‘No money, no declaration. I want three thousand euros” said the boy in imperfect English when jokingly speaking to reporters who were waiting outside the house on Via della Pergola…

He knows of the attention that will be paid to him by journalists because he has chosen not to live inside the Perugia old sity in an ordinary house, but instead in one that became the scene of a heinous crime for which a trial still proceeds.

The boy, about twenty years old, perhaps Spanish, went out in the afternoon and returned home at around 4:00 pm bringing a small bag, a trolley with two bags, a bag for PC and a backpack.

After closing the green gate behind him which gives access to the house, he stayed home for about ten minutes and then went out again.

Dressed in jeans and a red and blue shirt with a “9” printed on the back and the word ‘‘Espana’’ on the front, he seemed more amused than intimidated by the presence of the journalists. The young man reiterated his unwillingness to speak…

Then, along with three friends, probably all Spanish, he headed out again for a nearby bar to get some coffee takeaways to bring back to the new apartment.

On entering the house the four young men dragged the kitchen table and some chairs outside and they then set to talking quietly, with some amused glances reporters in the garden opposite the front door.

And the Italian news agency APCOM has a report that a Perugia estate agency is in several ongoing negotiations to rent out Meredith’s apartment, now extensively refurbished.

The house is owned by a retired woman who lives in Rome and who seems to be dependant on income from it to pay her way. We believe the Italian government made a payment to her for the period the house was sequestered - for most of the time it was sequestered at the request of the defenses.

That one of the apartments is again tenanted by students suggests there was no hike in the rent. But the value of the property seems certain to zoom soon in light of this proposal and might one day come down to make way for more parking in the area.

Our poster Kermit created a great Powerpoint show on the house’s rather strange history.

peter, did you see the report yesterday that a “CBS 48 Hours True Crime” producer was arrested for trying to extort 2 million dollars from David Lettterman.  says a lot.

Thanks, gramjan, yeah, it is getting huge buzz around NYC!

We will have a post up soon on this and the travesties of reports on the case that this highly biased producer helped to create - two of the three worst.

More justice for Meredith. Very poetic. More and more of those who went up against justice for Meredith are now looking diminished.

An email from Perugia indicates to us that those court hearings today or tomorrow on more tests for the defense dont yet seem to be happening.

If correct, perhaps the defenses have blinked and now want a quick end to the trial in face of the possibility of Rudy Guede singing his head off at his appeal 18 November.

Posted by Peter Quennell on 10/02/09 at 06:13 PM | #

I thought next court hearings would be on Oct. 9th.

Did Guede’s appeal get moved ahead a month?

Connfirmed from Perugia, former bad girl, the dates had been 2-3 October (you can see those dates in various reports) but at the close of last Saturday’s session the lead judge set October 9 for the evidence hearing.

Today we learned that a CBS 48HRs producer is indicted for blackmail/extortion of Dave Letterman. Given this alleged criminality and unethical behavior, one could wonder whether he was involved in the Knox infomercial hosted by Peter Van Sant which misrepresented the evidence, the prosecutor, and nearly all things Italian to favor Knox. Wonder whether money changed hands there involving Knox’s PR firm, Doug Preston, and others, and producers of 48HRs to package what is to date the most biased and factually bereft report.

I saw online a photo of Amanda. She was a child standing on a massive ship’s anchor. Will she drown in “The Sea of Truth?”

In Kristian Leontiou’s, “Some Say” video, the music opens with Meredith walking downstairs.  Prophetic? She may have gone downstairs, seen Amanda and Raf ripping off her boyfriend’s marijuana plants, and begun the deadly conflict?

Hi Hopeful. Many of us have wondered about the role of those plants if they had one. They might explain why Rudy was there. Meredith had agreed to feed her boyfriend’s cat and could have headed downstairs. Michael on PMF wrote a terrific series of comments on PMF on why there was cat blood around. They would make a good post here on TJMK.

The anchor you refer to, Hopeful, is a West Seattle landmark. The impish child captured climbing it is the innocent Amanda the FOA keeps putting before us. My email to the WS Herald complaining about their persistence in failing to present AK as an ADULT facing charges for ADULT behaviour got me barred from their website.
As to the “potted plants”, I would think that M’s rent money was a shinier treasure. It would be trickier to transport plants from one apartment to another, harder to explain, if they were caught on the street. I’m also guessing that they were advancing into harder drugs, or at least pills, to have attained a state of mind that allowed such an unfettered degree of violence. A lack of conscience is one thing, but such savagery does not generally appear among potheads.
I never heard a theory on why Guede chose Germany as his escape . Did he have friends or family there? We know AK does.
If we believe his account of the rent money argument (which is hard to swallow whole), Meredith confronted her housemate clad in little more than her bra and a pair of socks. I’m not sure an argument between the women ever took place at all.

Mimi, thanks for gloss on the anchor. Yes, I do believe they stole her rent money.
Peter, I’ll try to find Michael’s PMF about cat’s blood, thanks.

The snowflakes on Meredith’s hair in Leontiou video remind me of snowflake on cover of novel, “Sea of Truth,” Meredith was reading. Book’s theme of Catholicism and conflict seems symbolic. Amanda yearned to attend a Catholic high school, and at great cost did attend. Maybe she craved the security of Catholic faith, its long heritage, especially church stance on divorce, since hers was a broken home. Yet she is not Catholic. She has been deeply touched by the priest who washed her feet in jail. “A foot, a foot”. I believe on an early website like MySpace or Facebook, Amanda designated her religion as Wiccan. Horrors! Later it was amended to “atheist”.

Sollecito also attended a special school which didn’t fit him. It was a boarding school for orphaned children of doctors. He may have felt like an orphan. I think he and Amanda clicked immediately based on a sense of being alone in a cruel world and rejected by parents. Doctors tend to work long hours away from families, serving everyone else. Now Dr. Sollecito and Curt Knox are both forced to make up for lost time with their wounded children; and there was the true orphan, Rudy Guede.

In crime scene video of the cottage, one can see a book on Meredith’s nightstand, “Enduring Love,” by Ian McEwan. Its cover shows two tones of blue. The theme is obsessive attention by a disturbed individual. I think the title in its best sense, “Enduring Love, Lasting, Persistent Love,” points to the ongoing love that Meredith’s death has engendered. Her gentleness has made her great.

A very moving and insightful comment, Hopeful. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
When is the trial set to be over? I thought a verdict was due this fall but haven’t heard much lately. I am so nervous for the verdict and hope the guilty parties receive their due. Thank you.

Hopeful mentions AK’s self-described religion (or obsession of the moment) per social media. (I do not frequent MyFace, or Spacebook) but considering herself “wiccan”, if that was true, or atheist or anything else she chooses to style herself as just points to the notion that people will believe whatever it is convenient for them to believe.

I had wondered long ago whether or not the Knox/Mellas clan were churchgoers, or what extent, if any, had religion played in AK’s formulation of a moral compass. I was under the impression that her desire to attend the parochial prep school was based more on the idea that she sought the challenge (academically, for certain, but perhaps also the structure and discipline that was disrupted by divorce?)  Notice how, after her escalation into wild abandon, she gave the appearance of seeking refuge with the Sisters at Capanne . Does mass, or sacrament actually mean anything to her?

Don’t forget how, throughout history, religion (and intolerance) has been used to justify bloody murder . And don’t forget AK’s amusement at the idea that Her people killed His people (a taunt to her Jewish co-worker in the U District). Who deserves to live and who to die?

I have had classmates, from childhood upward, neighbours and co-workers of the Catholic faith, who have felt no discomfort in informing me that I (as a nonbeliever) would be spending the afterlife in a fiery furnace. At the age of 8 I was tormented and nearly suffocated in a neighborhood “dungeon” by the girls from St. Brigid’s, for my part in killing Jesus (and why couldn’t I remember doing so???)

I think that self-righteousness told Amanda that Meredith deserved to die, or was less deserving of life than herself. Once you allow yourself to perceive another as less than yourself, why feel guilt or shame or pain at their demise?  “The Nazi”, was the caption given to her snapshot with the Gatling gun, according to her sis, Deanna. Perhaps that is what she not-so-secretly aspires to be?

Hopeful posted this insightful response to Mimi’s moving comment above on another thread, but they should really be read together.

Mimi, I am so sorry you faced terror and a mean-spirited attack by Catholic schoolgirls in the basement. As a Christian, I apologize to you for their bad behavior. Zeal without love, zeal without knowledge, are dangerous. I hope you were not scarred beyond your ability to recover 100%.

I love the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in all his teachings. He wants us to walk in love toward all men. It’s very difficult for me.

I think Amanda did attend the West Seattle prep school for rigorous academics, maybe even more than for its religious content. She is very ruffled if police call her “stupid”. She is arrogant and prides herself on intellect. I think she’s a compulsive liar, the police got it correct.

I think Amanda’s a “Stranger in Two Worlds”, unsure of who she is, fragmented. I think she acted like a Nazi toward poor Meredith. She fled Germany the minute her uncle got her a good job there, rushing to Italy. Yet I think she dislikes Chris Mellas’s dark looks & his role in her life. Maybe she equates that with Meredith’s mixed racial features.

Competition academically, envy at the Erasmus program, jealousy over Patrick’s preference for Meredith’s work, the job loss, financial pressures, longing for the love Meredith had for her mother, wishing for brothers, wanting to show off to Raffaele, undergoing PMS, and dozens of factors led to Amanda’s final fury and Meredith’s end. It’s all so sad.

Posted by Peter Quennell on 10/07/09 at 03:21 AM | #

I think that arrogance was bred from contempt. Amanda is not an upper class, privileged young woman. She is from a middle class, working family. I see nothing that tells me her family is wealthy or comes from money. The reason why I am pointing this out? The American media seems to imply that this private school, well bred young woman would never be involved in this.

I have to disagree. I had my son in private school for many years. He was and still is very privileged yet, we are not wealthy. I believe that Meredith came from a more refined background. It appears that her family brought her up to be a very upstanding young woman with the proper poise, etiquette as well as a great education.

These are behaviors which Amanda doesn’t appear to exhibit to me. The Mellas/Knox Clans behavior gives great insight as to why Amanda would have contempt for Meredith. I so agree with your last two sentences, Hopeful. Amanda has shown contempt for the court as well as Merediths family.
